Web Project Progress Grade

Every student must upload their web site (not just one page) to Tripod so that it is available on web by the end of class today.

Your page-by-page instructions can be found on the sample site.

Instructions for uploading are available on the web project page of the class site.

Poetry Page

I will be coming around to check home pages today. Meanwhile, you should start working on your poetry page.

You need to post at least 3 revised and edited poems on your website. Add images to accent the content, but don't overdo it.

You can also add a description of yourself as a poet.

If you want, you can make individual pages for each of your poems and then link them to the base poetry page.  To do so, follow these steps:

1. Go to File, New, and add a blank page.

2. Save the new page into your web folder.

3. Add a hyperlink or link bar on your poetry page and make the link the file you have just saved.
(If you use a link bar, you also need to add the new page to your web's navigation structure.)

Home Page Content Criteria

Many of you are wondering, what you should put on the home page. Here is what I am looking for:

1. Give your web site a background.

2. Put in a background that doesn't overwhelm your viewers. Backgrounds should be tiled to blend. We don't want to see 17 pictures of a teddy bear that make it hard to read the text on the screen.

3. Put in an image or images that you want people to see when they come to your site. One picture of a teddy bear (instead of 17) can be interesting!

4. Design your link bar by right-clicking on it and changing the appearance. This is the one place where I recommend using the themes that are already available to you. Making buttons can be a pain.

5. If you want, add some introductory text. Just don't add too much text.

If you want to add music or animation, feel free to do so. Just don't make it overwhelming. Remember, the point is to get people's attention, not to distract them and drive them insane. (You might, for example, want to put in a way for them to stop the music.)

Lastly, remember that this is a class assignment. Yes, it should be personalized. However it should still be school-appropriate. If you want to make another website that is completely personalized once you have learned how to do so, you are welcome to. This is not the place for that, though. :)

Saving Images

Most of you will have LOTS of images inserted in your web site. It's a good idea to create a folder for the pictures you gather. Keep this one separate from your web folder.

When you do decide to use an image in your web, FrontPage will ask you if you want to save the images. I recommend changing the folder when you do this and saving all images into the web image folder. Otherwise, they just get cluttered and confusing.

If you have already saved a lot of images into your main web folder, you might want to move them into the image folder and re-insert them in your pages. Put any images you aren't using into that picture folder you created.

Web Site Assignment

Now that you've had some time to practice, it's time to build a web site.

For a sample published template site please go to http://watchingflowersgrow.tripod.com/.

You can download the template from EdLine. Extract the files into your folder and rename the web. We are going to go through this process step-by-step in class. If you miss it, please ask for help from Ms. Q or one of your classmates.

When you have correctly extracted your files, you should see a folder called web_site_template in your personal folder with a little icon of a globe on it. This tells you that you have a web, not just a page. Rename this folder to something that will identify your web by right clicking on the name.

Now, go to FrontPage and "Open Web" from the File menu. You will need to find the folder since it is not in My Documents.

By using a web, you can directly upload your entire site to Tripod instead of having to transfer things page by page. Your link bar will be updated automatically.

You can view the navigation structure through the navigation-view button on the left side of FrontPage. Indivudual pages can be opened through the page-view button.

If you want to add pages, you can. For example, you might want to put each poem on a separate page. If you do, just be sure to add each page to your web's navigation structure as well. Talk to me if you need help with this.

Templates can be used for the entire web, or for each page. It's up to you.

Remember, you cannot build a web out of an individual page. You need to first set up FrontPage to recognize the navigation structure of a web.

FrontPage Tutorial

There are many, many FrontPage tutorial sites available on the web. If you are looking for something specific, try a quick Google search.

Here is one of the most clear and comprehensive beginners' guides to using FrontPage that I was able to find: http://www.jgtemplates.com/learn/

  • In particular, you will find use for the FrontPage Editing Basics section of this site.

  • Before you begin, please go to the 3 headings under FrontPage Intro to get acquainted with the program.

today's assignment: Read the 3 pages listed below (from the tutorial site listed above).

Once completed, you can work on your page, using this site as a reference.

Tables

Today's assignment is to practice inserting tables into a FrontPage web page.

When you put text and images on your web site, make sure everything is in a table so that you can control the appearance. If you don't want the table to be visible, set the border to 0.

Here is a site that shows you how to insert and manipulate tables: http://teach.fcps.net/trt15/Presentation/FrontPage/Tables.htm

This one is a basic tutorial on FrontPage tables: http://www.electricteacher.com/tutorial2.htm

This one is more detailed and comprehensive (for those of you who are advanced): http://training.uncc.edu/Outlines/Internet/FrontPageTablesForms.pdf

FrontPage

Welcome to our next assignment, building a web page.

For today, I just want you to open up FrontPage from the start menu and practice building a web page. FrontPage is a Microsoft program so it is similar to Word in many ways. It coverts what you create into HTML so that you don't have to.

Instructions for saving your work in room 261 are posted in EdLine. You need to go to the page for our class for the instructions to show up under contents.

Some things to consider:

  • You can change the overall appearance of your page by going to themes under the format menu.
  • You can format the background on your own by going to background also under the format menu.
  • When you insert images and text, use tables to manipulate the layout.

My favorite resource for textures and images: http://www.grsites.com/
